Our Objectives

The Bahamas Medical Council is the Statutory body and administrative authority established to regulate the medical profession, to upgrade doctors through approved continuing medical education requirements, and to safeguard the public through means of receiving and disposing of complaints. In addition to any other powers or duties conferred or imposed by Medical Act on the Council, the objectives of the Council are-

+ to register medical practitioners who satisfy the requirements of this Act;

+ to provide guidance to the Medical profession in keeping with the promotion and protection of the welfare and interest of the patient population;

+ to determine, establish, maintain and ensure proper standards of professional conduct in the practice of medicine by registered medical practitioners as defined in the Standards of Professional Conduct established by the Council.

+ to provide in such manner as the Council thinks fit advice to registered medical practitioners on standards of professional ethics;

+ to ensure proper standards of general fitness to practice medicine by registered medical practitioners;

+ to establish a standard of professional education and proficiency in the practice of medicine by registered medical practitioners;

+ to cause to be published by the Registrar as required an annual list of all licensed practitioners, including any accepted specialty qualifications proved to the Council by the practitioner;

+ to cause when necessary to be compiled a list of specialist in keeping with generally accepted post graduate training and qualifications approved by the Council;

+ to do all such things as are incidental to the aforesaid objects or as the Council may think reasonably necessary to attain the above mentioned objects or any of them;

+ to provide Certificates of Good Standing where warranted and where requested in writing to the Council, provided that the applicant for such certificate pays the prescribed fee for the said certificate.
